"It is positive that intense exchanges of experience in cyber security and e-governance have begun between Estonia and member states of the OAS in recent years," Paul Teesalu, deputy secretary general of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for political affairs, said according to spokespeople for the ministry.

"The interest of countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in these topics brings a lot of attention to Estonia and creates new opportunities for developing relations in other areas as well," he said.

The main topics of the 48th general assembly of the OAS were democracy and evolvement of the human rights situation, combating corruption, the environment, and economic development. Teesalu delivered a paper at a discussion on cyber security and its importance in strengthening democracy held on the sidelines of the meeting.

Teesalu highlighted a cooperation agreement concluded with the OAS in 2014, under which Estonia has been sharing its cyber security and e-governance related experience with OAS member states.

On the sidelines of the general assembly, Teesalu had meetings with officials from OAS member states to present the Estonian bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The OAS, which brings together 35 American countries as members and 70 observers, was established in 1948. Estonia has been taking part in the organization's work as an observer since 2002.

Teesalu also visited the Dominican Republic, where he met with Deputy Foreign Minister Hugo Rivera. The deputy secretary general of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the deputy foreign minister of the Dominican Republic discussed relations between the two countries and cooperation in international organizations more broadly. Teesalu also presented the Estonian bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Teesalu paid a visit to the Santo Domingo cyber park and a meeting was held with its managers. In recent years Estonian experts have made several visits to Santo Domingo related to e-government and cyber security.
