iciHaiti - Politic : Core Group and CARICOM deeply concerned
On Monday, the Core Group (composed of Mamadou Diallo, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General and Ambassadors of Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, United States of America, and representatives of the Spain, the Organization of American States and the European Union), expressed its concern at the violent demonstrations of violence and looting, which largely paralyzed the country during this weekend, with negative effects on the economy. "The Core Group is saddened by the loss of life and expresses its condolences to the families of the victims.

While people's concerns about the difficulties of everyday life are legitimate, nothing can justify behaviors that may threaten the lives of people and the safety of property, as well as the progress made in recent years in terms of stability and democratic progress in Haiti. The Core Group condemns all acts of violence and encourages all parties in Haiti to exercise restraint and respect the constitutional order.

The Core Group urges national authorities to engage in a deep and inclusive dialogue with all other key actors in the country in order to restore calm, promote social cohesion and ensure the safety of people and property, in accordance with the rule of law .

The Core Group assures Haiti of its support for the country's stability and sustainable development."

For its part, in a statement, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is also concerned about the climate of violence in Haiti since the announcement of the drastic increase in the price of fuels https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24881-haiti-flash-the-price-of-gas-explodes-at-the-pump.html followed by withdrawal of this measure a few hours later https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24889-haiti-flash-the-government-suspend-its-decision.html .

CARICOM Statement on Haiti :

"The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply concerned at the violent protest in Haiti, a Member State of the Community.

The Chairman of CARICOM, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, speaking on behalf of the Community, stated: “The Community deplores the loss of life, property and the damage to infrastructure and calls for restraint and an end to the protests and the violence.”

The Community notes that the issues that have triggered these protests can only be resolved in an atmosphere of calm. In that regard the Community welcomes actions being taken to defuse the situation."
