United Nations Deputy Secretary-General

Michael Moller
United Nations Office at Geneva Director-General

Scott Foster
UNECE Director of Sustainable Energy

Leaders from three United Nations offices will address the North American Passive House Network Passive + Renewables conference, October 6, in Oakland CA to outline a new initiative aiming at transforming the world’s built environment to historic high energy performance and quality. The goal is to open a new era in sustainable buildings and energy as a path to global sustainability. The strategy is based on the new Framework Guidelines for Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings adopted by the UN Economic Commission for Europe. (See Framework document attached.)

Deputy Secretary General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed will address the opening session of the North American Passive House Network Passive + Renewables conference via video. UNOG Director General Michael Moller will address the session and take questions by live feed from Geneva. UNECE Sustainable Energy Director Scott Foster will oversee the session and address the conference in person. The event will underscore the importance of passive house design for a sustainable global future and the commitment of the United Nations to providing practical and effective leadership toward its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development now at the heart of the UN’s global strategy.

“The building-energy nexus is at the heart of the sustainability challenge—the buildings in which we live and work, and the energy they require, in large measure define development and the risk to sustainability,” said Ms. Mohammed. “We have relied on carbon for development. But innovations in building and energy science allow us to break that link. The building and energy professions can meet the challenge of sustainability. Now we must implement in ways that strengthen development, empower economies, and improve the quality of health and life enjoyed by all."
