Guyana to host Inter-American Congress of Tourism

Guyana will host the Inter-American Congress on Tourism next year. The Organization of American States (OAS) says a cooperation agreement has been signed with the Guyana government to host the 24th Inter-American Congress of Ministers from March 21-22.

Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the OAS, Riyad Insanally, and OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, signed the agreement on Thursday with the hemispheric body indicating that the event will be the first ever high-level OAS meeting in Guyana.

The two day meeting will be held under the theme “Connecting the Americas through Sustainable Tourism” and Insanally described it as “a historic occasion for Guyana.

“We look forward with pleasure and anticipation to welcome you all to Guyana. For us, sustainable tourism is critical for our development as a nation,” he added.

Almagro noted that tourism can “significantly expand economic opportunities for our citizens.

“It should be sustainable, ensuring that the economic, social, cultural and environmental elements are fully respected,” he said.

The 23rd Inter-American Congress of Tourism was held in Peru in 2015.
